The bulk of the pictures from this album were taken Sunday evening, Aug. 10, 2008, and Monday morning, Aug. 11, 2008. This photo representation was approached in a "walk-through": Images were selected during a walk through the neighborhood. In a lot of the evening images, you'll see how a low-in-the-sky setting sun casts dramatic light on its subjects. Because of the dramatic light, evenings before dusk and mornings after dawn are favorite times of day for photographers to take pictures. Hopefully in the weeks and months ahead, more "faces" in the neighborhood will make it into this album.

These images and this album are being added in light of the removal (unsure whether temporary or permanent), in fall 2008, of the James Garfield statue in front of the Burrello Family Center in Garfield Park.

You've read about it in the Garfield Gazette; here now are some pictures of the new footbridge over Bean Creek in Garfield Park, connecting the Sunken Garden with the MacAllister Center. The opening on Sept. 23, 2008, returned a creek passage that had been absent for 15 years when the original, historic bridge was dismantled due to structural damage and decay. Friends of Garfield Park led the "Bricks for the Bridge" campaign to help raise money to finance the $120,000 span. As the Gazette reported, funds also were leveraged from the Efroymson Fund of the Central Indiana Community Foundation, Indy Parks and the Marie Schoch Memorial Fund.

Several tornadoes pounded Indiana on Sunday evening, May 30, 2004, the day before Memorial Day. One, and possibly two, of those ripped through the Southside of Indianapolis, affecting the very southeastern tip of the Garfield Park-South neighborhood. Businesses on Shelby Street damaged or destroyed included Church's Chicken, Maria's Pizza and Dant Insurance, all on the west side of Shelby between Albany Street and Troy Avenue. Much of the 1000 block of Albany Street was affected. A tree in the middle of the block was uprooted, and other tree debris strewn about. Areas just outside the neighborhood boundaries also were affected. Stapert Tool and Machine Co., 2958 Carson Ave., across from Good Shepherd Catholic Church, was a total loss. A small used-car and auto repair business just south of Stapert's, at the southwest corner of Carson and Troy, lost the roof of its garage. At the southwest corner of Troy and Shelby, the twister punched huge holes into several buildings on the grounds of Gate City Steel, 3000 Shelby St. Jerry Becher, inside sales and purchasing manager for Gate City's products division, said the firm uses the largest facility for its steel fabrication operation. Stretches of Hanna Avenue in Perry Township and Cardwell's Do It Best Home Center at 3205 Madison Ave. were hit hard. Jeff Cardwell was forced to close his store and rebuild. A Southside nursing home, Friendship Healthcare, 2630 S. Keystone Ave., and nearby Sarah Shank Golf Course also sustained damage. Images in this photo album were taken the morning after, May 31, 2004. The photographs were taken on film, with prints then scanned into digital images.

The leaves are falling, the colors are in their prime but fading fast. Still vibrant to the autumn season are the variety of Hallween decorations people have designed for their homes and yards, leading up to the annual Oct. 31 trick-or-treating outing for children and their parents. This photo album attempts to represent a bit of the creativity among our neighbors and friends -- and with one of the photographs. See if you can tell which one.

The revival edition of the long-dormant Miracle Mile Parade along Madison Avenue on the Southside of Indianapolis, last held 50 years ago, came off splendidly. The parade, which came about largely through the efforts of a grassroots Southside development group called the Gateway Business Alliance, featured more than 70 entries, including the Indianapolis 500 Gordon Pipers, the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department Motorcycle Drill Team, a float of Manual High School football seniors, the Roncalli High School Drum Unit, the Throttle Stompers Car Club and Miss Madison Avenue 1957, Ruth Cummings Klopp.
The route for the revival year version had the parade starting at the junction of Troy Avenue and East Street, going west on Troy to Madison Avenue and turning north on Madison Avenue to Southern Avenue, where it turned east for a short jog and then south onto East Street, completing the circuit at the Christel DeHaan Academy. Parade marshals were Willard and Linda Fuller, founders of Habitat for Humanity.

The second year of the revived Miracle Mile Parade featured more entries, a longer and alterered route and two marching bands, representing Southport and Perry Meridian High Schools on the Southside of Indianapolis. This year, the route extended from Southern to Hanna avenues, nearly a mile longer than the half-mile circuit in 2007. In addition, organizers reversed the direction; instead of marching south to north, paraders went the opposite direction, north to south, starting from Southern and ending at Hanna. Parade marshals this year were Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard and his wife, Winnie. Participants included P.E. MacAllister, chairman of MacAllister Machinery Co. and chairman of the board of Friends of Garfield Park. It is MacAllister for whom the Garfield Park amphitheater is named.

The Philharmonic Orchestra of Indianapolis, conducted by Orcenith Smith, music director of DePauw University orchestras and opera, performed a free concert at MacAllister Center for the Performing Arts before a nice-sized crowd. This album contains some images from that show.

Fall colors can be viewed in several ways. The full spectrum -- the mix of yellows, purples, burgundies, reds and oranges, sprinkled among the winnowing greens -- or by individual color. By circumstance, trees with same-color leaves can be found bunched together. The yellows and oranges seem to dominate, which is why, when you find the lesser-seen reds, you tend to pay unusual attention. All of the reds (and the few non-reds, which are included on the basis of aesthetic merit) were shot on Nov. 1, 2008, in Garfield Park.

Whether it's swimming, jogging, touch football, in-line skating, tennis, pick-up basketball, biking, leisurely strolls or family cookouts, the park offers its most amenities in summer, when the temperatures warm and the urge to enjoy the outdoors heats up. The rich, multihued greens dominate the park landscape palette, inspiring a vibrant and verdant photographic canvas.
